Small Animal Inhalation Anesthesia Using Small Laboratory Animal Ventilator and Medium Animal Anesthetic Machine

Abstract

|
Background: The specific anesthetic machines that are proper to each species should be equipped for inhalation anesthesia of various animals. However, it is very expensive to purchase all these equipments.
Method: In order to solve these problems, we established an inhalation anesthesia method in rabbits in combination of the existing small laboratory animal ventilator and medium animal anesthetic machine. Connections of each tubes are as follows: “room-air” port of the ventilator is connected to the patient Y-piece of the anesthetic machine. Then “expired-air” port of the ventilator is connected to the scavenger hose of the anesthetic machine and then, patient Y-piece of the ventilator is connected to the cuffed E-tube.
Result & conclusion: The present anesthetic circuit system will be suitable for long term surgery or open-chest procedure in small laboratory animals.
